April 2009 Update
More activity to report! On 2nd April the community coaches were invited to run a tag rugby delivery course for 18 teacher assistants from all over Medway. The two hour course was held at Danecourt Community School. On the same afternoon Medway RFC hosted an inter district Under 15’s and 13’s schoolboy 10’s competition on behalf of the Howard Schools Partnership competition manager. The Maths School, Rochester won the Under 15’s competition and Swanley Community College won the Under 13’s competition. In total 7 teams were involved in the event jointly run my Medway and Gravesham Competition Managers.
During March and early April Hempstead Junior School, Temple School, Rainham Grammar School for Girls, Chatham Grammar School for Boys and English St Martyrs continued to benefit from community coaching support.
The 16th April saw the club hosting an Easter activity day on behalf of the Greenacre Sports Partnership. 12 children between the ages of 8 and 11 took part in a 4 hour rugby training session in the rain and the mud – and all left with a smile on their face
Vikki Soles Sports Development Officer from The Greenacre Partnership “On behalf of the Greenacre School Sports Partnership I would like to say a massive THANK YOU for all you support over the Easter period. It was our first time running Community Sports Camps and they were definitely a huge success. I believe we delivered the various sports activities to 240 children and young people from across Medway – this can only get bigger in the future. Once again, many thanks for your continued support in developing sport throughout Medway”
Saturday 18th April saw St Andrews, St Margarets of Rainham, Balfour and Pilgrims playing for the Medway Schools Cup in glorious conditions. After a round robin competition St Andrews and St Margarets ended up going head to head in the cup final and Balfour and Pilgrims battled it out for the plate. St Margarets came out on top in a very tight competition and Balfour won the plate. Each school received a plaque, some goodies and a set of t-shirts kindly donated by Kent RFU.
During May two further community coaches joining the programme, specifically supporting Meirs Court and All Saints after school activities. This will bring the number of active community coaches to 7.On 11th May a development league for the 2009 Mini Youth Games tag rugby competition starts and runs until 20th June each Monday afternoon from 4pm until 5pm. 12 schools are expected to take part in the league.
