Community Coaching Summer 2008 Update

Summer School League

Summer Schools League 1The summer school league was won by St Margarets School (Rainham) with a try scored with the last play. The try secured the league win for St Margarets and just narrowly denied Miers Court the league title. St Margarets (Troy) came third closely followed by St Thomas Moore, Wainscott, Balfour, Pilgrims and St Michaels. Each school received a plaque, goodie bags and a set of childrens books kindly donated by Random House of London.

Summer Schools League 2The next league will commence mid September in the run up to the mini youth games. This event will be for years 5 & 6 and all schools taking part in the mini youth games are invited to take part. Any schools wishing to take part should contact Sarah Risby at Medway Sports Development by email sarah.risby@medway.gov.uk

Summer Schools League 3The 2nd Medway Schools Cup will take place in April 2009. This is an invitation only event and this year will involve a Cup and Plate competition. Schools will be invited to take part from those who take part in the afterschools leagues.

A Summer school league is also planned for May 2009.

On 29th March 2008 St Andrews lifted the inaugural Medway Schools Cup. Balfour Juniors, Meirs Court and St Margarets of Rainham battled it out in a fiercely contested series of matches and the crowds were rewarded with 100 tries in all being scored over the three rounds. All the schools received a commemorative plaque and a goodie bag. In 2009 we plan to expand the event to also include a plate and bowl competition and we will be inviting 12 schools to take part, 4 in the Cup event and 4 in the plate event and 4 in the bowl event.

The Medway Schools Cup has been set up to give our regular after school tag rugby leagues a direction, whilst the main theme for the leagues is to provide coaching support for the developing players and teachers it is evident that there is a demand for an annual competitive event in additional to the leagues and the annual mini youth games tag rugby event. Only schools that take part in the after school leagues will be considered for inclusion in the Medway Schools Cup competition.

The next after school league, for Years 4 & 5 children starts on Thursday 1st May 2008 and 12 schools have applied to take part.

The next mini youth games have provisionally been arranged for Tuesday 11th November and we are working with Medway Sports Development to once again host this event at the club.

2007/2008 saw us commence the introduction of our direct school links/partnerships with Hoo St Werburg (Hoo) , Featherby (Rainham) , St Andrews (Rochester) , St William of Perth (Rochester) and Pilgrims (Borstal) . All the schools received equipment and/or coaching resources. 2008/2009 will see us expand our direct school links with another 4 schools. If any schools are interested in getting involved please email trevor.jefferies@roadpilot.com or call 07793 196525

The following is the results of the inaugural Medway Schools Cup competition held last Saturday.

Round 1
St Andrews 7 - Balfour Juniors 8
St Margarets (Rainham) 10 - Meirs Court 10

Round 2
Balfour Juniors 8 - Meirs Court 8
St Andrews 8 - St Margarets (Rainham) 7

Round 3
St Andrews 9 - Meirs Court 7
Balfour Juniors 9 - St Margarets (Rainham) 9

This resulted in St Andrews winning, Balfour Juniors were runners up and Meirs Court and St Margarets (Rainham) tied for 3rd place.

It was a fantastic event, the matches were played on the show pitch prior to Medway 1st teams league game and the kids entertained the crowds with 100 tries being scored! Each team picked up an award and goodie bags. St Andrews picked up the Ron Jefferies memorial cup and will be bringing it back next year.

The cup event has been set up to allow schools who take part in the regular after school leagues to play in a competitive environment.

At Medway RFC we are committed to helping local schools to play rugby, which we feel goes a long way to securing the long-term future of rugby within Medway.

At primary school level we run regular tag rugby school leagues for Years 5 & 6. We also hold additional events for Years 3 & 4. We are also involved in the running of the KM Mini Youth Games tag rugby event each year. Last year 31 schools were involved in the mini youth games. In November 2007 the event will be hosted at Medway RFC.

School leagues also serve as an opportunity for current youth team players to get involved in coaching and match official duties and their support is very much appreciated.

Involved in the 2006/2007 schools leagues were St Andrews, Featherby, Balfour, Meirs Court, St Margaret’s (Rainham), Blith, Hempstead, Hilltop, Hoo-St-Werburgh & Wayfield.

We are pleased that the following additional schools will be involved in 2007/2008 events. These are St Michaels, Twydall, St Margarets of Troy Town and St William of Perth.

Spring 2008 will also see the inauguration of the Medway Schools Cup, a competitive tag rugby school league, which will run in addition to the regular friendly school league fixtures.

This year we are creating specific school links and have set up partnerships with St Andrews, St William of Perth, Hoo-St-Werburgh and Featherby. As part of this link Medway RFC have sourced and provided equipment and coaching resources.

We will look to expand this project with another 4 schools partnerships being added in 2008 and any schools interested in getting involved with the club and setting up Mini Medway RFC academies within their schools should contact School Liasion Officer, Trevor Jefferies.
