First game of the day, for the Gold team was Medway Gold V Westcombe Park. Our opponents started strongly, scoring tries in quick succession, leaving Medway 6-0 down at half time. After a quick pep talk from coach, a more confident Medway ran out with better defending and some tough tackles by Leon Ward and making ground with straight running by Beard - Medway finally gained a consolation try by Kelsey. The game finished 8-1 to Westcombe Park.
Next up, Medway played the home side. Medway went 2 down early on, but with some great passing shown by Harris and Graham and a sprint by Beard saw him fire his way through the Old Colfeian defence to score a try before half time. The second half saw the Medway defence tire and the home side ran in three more tries to secure a 5-1 victory.
In the third round Medway were up against Bromley. After winning the toss, Medway showed some early promise with their attacking game, but they were no match for Bromley's determined side, the ensuing defensive tackles made were countless - particularly from Schmoeger and Beville, the Meds battled to successfully hold up the ball over the try line just before half time. The second half brought some good rucking and mauling and some inventive play by Settle and Kirwan saw Medway at times, look dangerous, but further tries by Bromley saw them win 8 nil.
With three games down, Medway's last game was against Tonbridge Judd’s. No one could fault the relentless effort and determination shown by every Medway player, they battled on and defended bravely, with ever-improving play from Beal and Thomas and a superb tackle at the close of play by new lad Cordingley, Medway finally succumbed to a 4 nil defeat.
