LATEST NEWS - 6 APRIL 2013

Great news! Congratulations to Medway 1st XV players Ryan Redman and George Oram who have both been selected to represent the England Counties Under 20 side and will make a two test tour Georgia in May.

The boys, together with another Medway player Douglas Ebanks, played for the London & South East England Division in the recent Divisional festival at Wellbeck College, Loughborough. The competition run over the Easter weekend acted as the final England trial. London Division won the festival and all the boys gave excellent performances.

Douglas Ebanks ,sadly however, had his push for selection cut short when an accidental clash of heads saw him suffer a severe cut to the head which required a surgeon to repair. The injury ended Doug's chances of selection when the medical advice was that Doug should not play again this season.

Another Medway 1st XV player Ollie Best, who is on exchange with the Oriental Rongatai club in Wellington New Zealand, made his debut for them scoring 17 points in their opening match. Tim Reddish Executive Director of the 'Ories' stated that it was an impressive start for Ollie.

Just to remind everyone the Senior Club Dinner takes place in the clubhouse on Friday 17th May. The tickets are on sale at £20 and are available from your Team managers or the club shop. The guest speaker is Paul Turner former Wales International Fly Half and coach of Newport Dragons and Wasps. Paul is also the coach of current English County Champions Hertfordshire.

Medway RFC will host the key Senior County Championship match between Kent and Cornwall at Priestfields on Saturday 11th May kick off 3pm.

The 1st XV squad set off on their bi-annual tour on the 18th April. This season sees them off to Cyprus taking on the Akrotiri and Paphos clubs before returning on the 22nd.

COUNTY REPRESENTATION FOR MEDWAY

Medway RFC are proud that four of our current First XV squad represented Kent U20s against Hertfordshire on Sunday 10th February. Ollie Best, Ryan Redman, George Oram and Douglas Ebanks all acquitted themselves well during the game which was eventually shaded by Hertfordshire by the narrow margin of 19 points to 14. Ryan kicked two penalties and Ollie got on the score board via a dropped goal. Both George and Doug featured prominently in a forward orientated game due to the poor weather conditions making back play extremely difficult.

Well done to all four who looked to easily be amongst the strongest members of the Kent team.

NEW SIGNINGS

Great news for Medway RFC. Ollie Best, Kent's under 20 & 23 Fly Half, has signed for the club. Ollie was looking for a fresh challenge and Medway play the sort of Rugby he enjoys. He has moved into the area and is a very significant signing for the club. Ollie had the opportunity of playing for clubs in higher leagues but chose Medway. He is an exciting talent that will enhance the ability of our squad to play in London Division 2.

The club are also very pleased to announce the signing of two players from New Zealand. Josh Gibbs, a loose head prop, and Hamish McLennan, a utility back row player hail from the Waikato area of New Zealand. The boys, like all the new signings, have fitted in well and we are delighted to have them.

Another signing for the club with huge potential is Harry Worrow. Harry is a former Blackheath player who took a short break from the game to take up weightlifting and further his career as a personal trainer. He is a versatile player, who can play hooker but has experience of playing in midfield. He trains hard and looks to be improving at every session. We expect Harry to be competing for a 1st XV place very soon.

IAN DANCE

Ian Dance has taken up the post of 1st XV Team Manager. Ian has been a stalwart of the club for many years and as well as being a 1st XV player, is a former Captain. Ian's knowledge and organisational skills will be invaluable to the Senior Group.
