On a bright sunny Saturday Medway travelled to Kent rivals Sidcup to take them on in an intriguing league fixture with both sides having their early season trials and tribulations. The game kicked off in excellent playing conditions with the wind at the Sidcup backs. The first 20 minutes turned into an arm wrestle with nether side securing any form of dominance. Chances did come for both sides but handling errors combined with good defence ensured no score for either side. It was not until the 23rd minute that the scoreboard was troubled. The visitors had a scrum on their own 22m. Jordan Stubbington broke and gained ground however the support were deemed guilty of sealing off and Sidcup kicked to resultant penalty to lead 3-0. On 27 minutes a powerful run from Dan Huntley narrows the Sidcup defence and the ball is fed wide to Conor Chalmers. Chalmers kicks behind the home cover and as he races for the ball and line is taken out off the ball by the home winger. The referee awards the penalty and the yellow card reduces Sidcup to 14 men. Medway kick for the corner but Sidcup turn the ball over and look to exit. Good defence in midfield from Medway wins the penalty at the breakdown and Daniel Harvey levels the scores.
The teams go in at half time level at 3-3.
The second half kicks off with Medway now having the advantage of the breeze. They are soon pressing Sidcup and as a result win a penalty for the home side coming in at the side of a ruck. Harvey is on target and Medway lead 3-6. Sidcup came back out and secured possession from the kick off. A kick behind the Medway defence from that possession is knocked on. The resultant scrum sees Medway penalised. Sidcup run and carry the ball and two missed tackles see them crash over for the converted try 10-6. On 61 mins Medway are themselves reduced to 14 men when Jordan Stubbington is penalised for coming in the side of a Sidcup catch and drive lineout. Despite this Medway win the resultant line out and clear their lines. Medway make changes to try and secure the victory. Maik Timmerman replaces Richard Petch. Lewis Stimpson comes on for Stubbington once the yellow card expired. Medway had numerous chances on the Sidcup line with line outs and strong carries but to the credit of the home sides defence they kept their line intact and secured the victory.
Coach Taff Gwilliam said “this is obviously a disappointing result as we had several chances to win the game. Our poor skill execution and lack of patience combined with a quality defence from Sidcup resulted in the loss” he added “I cannot fault the effort and intensity of the boys they worked hard and the bonus point may prove crucial in the long run”.
