This weekend saw the much anticipated waterfall finals held at Sidcup with the Medway under 14s playing in the top tier event after a superb performance in round one. The girls were in high spirits, excited and a bit nervous going into two games against TJs and Sevenoaks in the cup competition.
The first game was against Sevenoaks, a team they had not played before who were well drilled, strong and clinical. Our girls got off to a slow start conceding a couple of early tries leaving them chasing the game. While they did manage to score in the first half Sevenoaks also scored again to go in with clear lead. The second half was much closer with both teams scoring and some hugely committed defense and attack from both sides. Unfortunately Medway could not close the gap leaving them needing to beat TJs and rely on Sevenoaks losing to win the competition.
With an hour before the next game the girls took on food (sugar) and settled in to watch the other teams play off against each other (mess about in the stands). They also had the opportunity to meet the star guest and Red Roses Captain Marlie Packer who was at the event signing autographs and watching the next generation.
The second game kicked off against TJs and again Medway conceded an unfortunate early score before playing their way into the game through dogged defense and determined attack. At the end of the first half TJs were just ahead but all was to play for. Unfortunately in the second half they could not quite get their game plan to click in the face of a a very fierce opposition and lost by 3-2 a very narrow margin.
It was not be this year but the girls will be back and have the opportunity to make memories playing with their friends. They showed, courage, skill and fierce determination all day. Coaches and parents were and are extremely proud of them playing the game in the spirit that it was intended. Thanks as always to our fabulous parents for bringing the girls and cheering them all day. #lovedandfeared
