After a couple of weeks of friendlies Medway resumed their league campaign, putting two full sides out with subs in pools 2A and 2B.
After the two minutes silence to commemorate all those who have fallen in conflict, Medway Colts 1st XV took on a well drilled Old Elthamians side at home on the show pitch with a sell-out crowd and the minis section providing an amazing guard of honour.
Both sides started with good structured play with Old Es lineout and scrum putting Medway under pressure at the set piece. Medway built pressure with good ruck ball in the opposition's 22 only to be denied a try by a ferocious Old Es defence. After a continued salvo from Medway’s big ball carries in the form of Kier Wootton, Oli Barnes, Richie Ajuzie and John ‘Dummy’ Gallagher Old Es gave up a penalty for Jamie Ford to step up and slot 3 points.
Old Es with the bit between the teeth went through well worked ruck phases to gain a scrum in Medway’s 22. A slick blind side move from the base of the scrum saw Old Es winger scorch down the 5m channel and dot the ball down to put Old E’s ahead, unfortunately they didn’t convert and the score remained at 3-5.
With some good loose play from a marauding pack of Jude Craven, JJ Little, Ryan D and Ryan B Medway made ground into the Old E half. From a solid set piece scrum and some quick hands from Ben Riches, Sam Prenter and Centres Jamie Ford and Bailey Bunker, Tom Carney hit the line at pace to put Liam Walter’s away in the corner. Jamie Ford narrowly missed hitting the post, which left Medway in the lead 8-5. However minutes later Old Es conceded a penalty for Jamie Ford to add 3 points making it 11-5 as the half time whistle blew.
The second half continued in a similar fashion with Medway resuming good structured play with sub Lewis Young adding impetus to Medway’s attacking threat which resembled something like a Cruise Missile, pinning Old Es into their own half. Good box kicking from Ben Riches and Dementor style chasing by Billy Gallagher set Medway up for their next try. Quick recycled ball saw Bailey Bunker execute a silky backs move to cut a line through Old Es defence to score under the post. Jamie Ford slotted the extra 2 to make it 5 -18
The last period of the game saw Medway open up with another attack on Old Es 10m line which saw Lewis Young step, bounce and Ash Splash a final try for Medway to convert and finish up 25-5.
Great team work by the whole squad saw a well-deserved win against their strongest opposition yet.
