Medway 75 – Hastings/Aylesford 50
Medway U12s produced another excellent performance to secure a 75–50 victory over a strong
Hastings/Aylesford side. With 24 players available, including a number making their U12 debut,
the girls embraced the challenge and delivered an exciting afternoon of rugby in demanding
conditions.
We are incredibly grateful to both teams for making the journey to Medway, with Hastings in
particular travelling down from the South Coast in force. It was fantastic to welcome them, and
we really appreciate the commitment they showed in making the fixture happen.
The game was played across four quarters on a maximum-sized pitch. Combined with the
afternoon heat, this made for tiring conditions, but the girls acquitted themselves brilliantly.
Hastings/Aylesford started strongly, scoring early and forcing Medway to respond on a number
of occasions. Medway showed great character and composure to stay in the game and, as the
match progressed, gave the home supporters plenty to enjoy.
The visitors played some very good rugby, but Medway responded with some excellent rugby of
their own, showing real quality in both attack and defence.

With a number of players going close to scoring, the final score could arguably have been even
higher. However, while it is fantastic to see so many girls getting over the line, it is important to
remember that rugby is a team sport. Every try is built on the work of teammates, and every
player has an important role to play.
The unselfish actions that often go unnoticed are just as important as scoring a try: supporting
the ball carrier, passing into space, hitting the ruck, hooking the ball in the scrum, making a
tackle, communicating with teammates or simply creating space for someone else. Without
every player working collectively, the team cannot achieve what it did today.
It would be impossible to highlight all of the excellent work done by the players today, but two
performances in particular deserve recognition from the Medway coaching team.
Flo was a constant menace in defence. Her bravery, commitment and willingness to put her
body on the line were there for everyone to see. She made a number of excellent tackles and
played with tremendous energy throughout the game. Flo was deservedly named as one of
Medway's two Players of the Match.
The second Player of the Match was Connie, a real unsung hero of the team. Her contribution in
both attack and defence was equally impressive, and it was particularly lovely to see her playing
with a smile on her face and enjoying her rugby. Her work rate and commitment throughout the
game were outstanding, and she thoroughly deserved the recognition.
Rosa was awarded Hastings/Aylesford's Opposition Player of the Match following another
excellent performance.
A huge well done to all 24 girls who represented Medway today. The scoreline is only one part
of what was an excellent afternoon of rugby. The teamwork, defensive commitment, bravery and
enjoyment shown by the girls were the real highlights.
And finally, a huge thank you again to Hastings/Aylesford for travelling and contributing to such
a competitive and enjoyable game.
